Work experience is the x-factor for young job hunters
New research shows lack of experience is the number one barrier to employment amongst 18-24 year olds
Lack of experience and increased competition are the main causes of youth unemployment according to figures released today by Reed in Partnership.
As thousands celebrate GCSE results today, the welfare-to-work provider warns young people are likely to need experience, as well as grades, to secure the job they want.
The report, due to be published in full later this week, polled 1,800 unemployed young people. The findings reveal that 68% of young people believe their main barrier to employment is a lack of experience - up 17% on 2009. 61% of people polled stated that too much competition for jobs kept them out of work.
As GCSE results hit a record high, thousands of students will have impressive results. Employers will be looking for those with the ‘x-factor’ and that means work experience. 83% of young people said it had boosted their confidence and 81% said it had helped them to gain new skills – things that make the difference when looking for work.
Chris Melvin, CEO of Reed in Partnership said: “In the current environment employers are often faced with a large number of applicants for any given position. Young people need to make themselves stand out. One of the ways they can do this is through work experience. Demonstrating your interest in a particular field shows enthusiasm and initiative – two vital skills for any employer.”
Despite the challenges, young job hunters remain optimistic about their prospects - 63% believe they will secure a job within three months.
