Reed Finance Gives an Insight into Working in London for Newly Qualified Finance Professionals

Recruitment specialist Reed Finance gives the low-down on job prospects for newly qualifieds (NQs) considering working in London.

What types of jobs are most commonly available for NQs in the capital?

It really depends on the type and level of academic qualifications a candidate possesses.

In the Banking and Financial Services sector there are opportunities for candidates with a strong finance thread running through their academic career.

As the country emerges from recession, we expect there will be a growing demand for NQ Practice and Audit candidates as more businesses review their internal structures and strengthen their finance functions.  Meanwhile, the continued popularity of the CIMA qualification means that as businesses return to more profitable positions there will be more opportunities for Management Accountants.

Which sectors are particularly strong for NQs?

The volatility within both the economy and the job market, even after the general election, makes it very difficult to state with any degree of certainty where the strongest demand currently lies.

However, it would appear that the smart money is leaning towards the energy sectors, especially Mining, Oil & Gas and Utilities.

Interestingly, while large cutbacks are looking inevitable in the public sector, this could easily result in a growth in Interim/Contract roles as organisations look to reduce their Permanent headcount.

What is the average salary in London for NQs?

Depending on the sector, salaries typically range from mid-£30s to £40,000.

Are there many jobs currently available for NQs in London?

There are certainly more vacancies now than there were 12 months ago, and the more flexible the job seeker is prepared to be, the greater the number of opportunities that will open up to them.

While we are some way off from the ‘war for talent’ that existed two to three years ago, an open-minded, newly qualified accountant shouldn’t have too much difficulty in securing a new role.

What are some of the main benefits, highlights and attractions of living and working in London?

Attractions and lifestyle: There is a massive cross-section of entertainment, leisure, cultural and sporting venues in the capital, which caters for almost every taste. With so much on offer, lifestyles vary enormously.

Travel: road, rail and air links to the capital are excellent. London is a large city and so journey times within the capital can be lengthy.
